We created Garage East in 2007 as a design partnership between then typographer, Jessica Paulo, and Art Director, Barry Maitland-Stuart. Our purpose was simple and idealistic: create work in which the beauty stems from the way it was made.

That’s still our purpose.

Even in the 2000s, trendy generic graphics were becoming ubiquitous thanks to how readily available and cheap (or even free) they were online. Two decades later, that situation has become more pronounced as Machine Learning (broadly AI) accelerated rapidly into photography, illustration, design, and copywriting and the result is an abundant gloss on everything. The problem is that when everybody in the room looks perfect, nobody looks appealing. ///
